12 x 6 in. printed broadside being a newspaper extra containing breaking news regarding the surrender of Fort Sumter in South Carolina by Union forces to the Confederates.
The official start of the Civil War spurred patriotic demonstrations in many cities, including the organization of home guards and practice of military drills. A Washington correspondent for the New York Times reports here that the War Department "is engaged in calculating the quotation of troops in each State...No detailed policy relative to closing southern ports is yet settled, but arrangements are making to cut off all communication by sea."
Also reported are rumors that General Scott has resigned "because his advice against re-inforcing Fort Sumter was regarded worthless."
Details of the evacuation of Major Anderson and his men are also reported, along with indications that a plan to retake Fort Sumter "at all hazards" is underway. In fact, the day this extra was issued, 15 April, President Lincoln would issue a proclamation calling for 75,000 volunteers to put down the rebellion and take back federal property.
